Penhurst Books, Suite SJO 2086, 1601 NW 97th Ave., Miami, Florida 33102 USA; 877-496-0416 2002, 347 pp. ISBN 0-9705684-8-7

Seldom does a book pass my desk that has as much worthwhile information as A Physician’s Guide To Natural Health Products That Work by James A. Howenstine, MD. Dr. Howenstine has written this book from 34 years of Front Line Health Experience. This book is jam packed full of valuable information for both the Clinician and lay person. Almost every poor health condition is covered in this book, as well as an explanation as to why there is so much sickness. Dr. Howenstine very clearly explains what’s wrong with our present Medical system. He covers the problems with the food we eat, as well as the hazards of ‘junk’ so-called food, additives etc. He covers vitamins and minerals one by one, quoting relative studies all through the book. The whole gamut of diseases is covered including Immune, Heart, Diabetes, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Insomnia, Overweight, Gastrointestinal, Men’s and Women’s Health issues, Skin Conditions, Emphysema etc. I cannot see anything missing. He fully covers such diverse topics as Alcoholism, HIV infection and Impotence. Most books contain little valuable information for me but this book is loaded with ideas that I can add immediately to my practice protocols. We treat rheumatoid arthritis quite successfully, using mostly the protocols from the Arthritis Trust. Dr. Howenstine suggests using Thymic extract as well as usual vitamins, minerals etc. to arrest rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosis, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, hepatitis B and C. I’ve heard of Thymic extract before but have never used it. Now I will.

Chapter 14 deals with Malignancies (Cancer, Lymphoma, Leukemia.) I believe Dr. Howenstine is exactly right when he says this; “I believe that efforts to heal the immune system will more likely eventually lead to a cure for cancer than developing new chemotherapy agents.” I maintain there already are viable cancer cures. Dr. Howenstine goes on to explore various cancer protocols and treatments including AHCC, Antineoplastins, Budwig’s treatment and other valuable information.

Chapter 25 is loaded with great information on Longevity and Anti-Aging Medicine. Dr. Howenstine has obviously been a serious student all his life and it’s amazing that for less than twenty dollars one can get a book such as this. Researching all this information and knowledge would take years of study.

Appendix “A” has very pertinent information on how to prevent drug-induced nutrient deficiencies. All major classes of drugs are covered.

This book is a must have for all serious clinicians and lay people alike. It has my highest endorsement and is a book I will keep on my desk and refer to continually.
